2.5 miles easy, 6 miles tempo
Ran the Queen Margaret Drive route before breakfast in 19:09 for a 7:41/mile average for the 2.49 miles, HR 131. The Kalenji Eliofeet seem to be fine for this type of thing.

The club training session in the evening was a fartlek so I thought I would give it a go. Turnout was fairly poor. I didn't arrive in time to hear the route but became suspicious as we headed along the new path towards Dawsholm Road. When it was confirmed that we were supposed to run along the Kelvin Walkway, which to my mind has too uneven a surface and too many pedestrians, dogs and cyclists for a fartlek session, I bailed out and ran up Dawsholm Road to Maryhill Road. I picked up the pace a bit with little prospect of ending up with a decent average after a slow first half-mile. My alternative route took me down Garrioch Road, up Shakespeare Street, back down Queen Margaret Drive, along Great Western Road to Anniesland Cross and back into Garscube Estate through the top gate. I finished at the pavilion with a total of 5.98 miles, time 39:05 for a decent 6:32/mile average, HR 154. Some of the mile splits were my fastest wearing the Vomeros.
Pace splits (ave. HR): 8:00 (132), 6:23 (151), 6:06 (156), 6:14 (161), 6:18 (164), 6:10 (167)

5.5 miles steady
Back in Glasgow. In the early evening I ran a loop up Maryhill Road, onto the canal at Shakespeare Street, along Dorchester Avenue and back along Great Western Road. Wore the HRM again, which was quite painful with bruised ribs. Felt very fatigued. Finished the 5.54 miles in 39:08, average pace 7:04/mile, HR 148.

4.2 miles slow
I was able to run OK after the previous day's accident, so I went out with Natasha in the morning to try the correct version of Wednesday's route. I was wearing an orange pair of Kalenji Eliofeet which I had bought in Monaco on Thursday after seeing a TV ad earlier in the week. They were a bit plasticky but very light (if not Mayfly-light) and supposedly only intended for one short run per week. I forgot I was wearing them after a while, just as the manufacturers claim. This time we turned left at the roundabout and headed down to Avenue de Cannes as I had originally intended, and along Boulevard Raymond Poincaré towards the hotel. Distance was 4.20 miles, time 37:36 for an 8:57/mile average.

6.5 miles steady
In the afternoon I headed along a busy seafront and up Chemin des Sables for a loop of Cap d'Antibes, wearing the Distance S instead of the Vomeros for a change. The boulevard along the coast seemed to go on for so long that I wondered if I had missed my turn, but I eventually found the road which took me up to Boulevard du Cap, which also went on for ages. On the way back down Chemin des Sables I stepped briefly off the pavement to dodge a couple of unyielding tourists. It turned out that there wasn't enough space between a car and a lamp post to do this safely at speed, and I clipped the car's wing mirror before crashing to the ground. Got straight back up and took a more direct route back to the hotel to inspect varying degrees of damage to my left shoulder, elbow, hand, hip and knee. Completed the 6.48 miles in 44:55, average pace 6:56/mile. I don't remember the last time I fell while running on the road. It may have been during a long rep session in Garscube Estate several years ago when I tripped on a speed bump.

3.2 miles slow, 6.5 miles steady
Ran the seafront route with Natasha before breakfast, finishing the 3.18 miles in 26:48, average pace 8:25/mile.
Pace splits: 8:31, 8:16, 8:28, 8:29
In the afternoon I tried a longer version of the inland loop, continuing along Route de Saint-Jean to the roundabout at the end, which added another Clevedenesque hill, and heading towards town. When I got to the roundabout, there was an extra slip road which hadn't been on my map. After stopping for a minute to figure out where I was, I decided I must have reached the next roundabout down the road and went straight across instead of turning left. This actually took me onto the Chemin de Saint-Maymes which seemed to go on for ages and was taking me round in a large circle, so it could have been worse. It was also pretty flat. The sea was in the distance once the trees cleared so I still thought I was going the right way. I got back to a main road eventually, turning left as I had remembered, and I soon passed some sports pitches which made me suspicious as they seemed to be on the wrong side of the road. After a few hundred yards I ended up back at the original roundabout.
Rather than risk getting lost again I headed back up the Route de Saint-Jean, down Boulevard Pierre Delmas and all the way down the hill to cut the route as short as possible after some unplanned extra miles. There was still time to pick the wrong road from a choice of two and head up Route de la Badine, but I recognised a familiar hill in the distance and turned onto Rue Pierre Loti, which took me back down to a street I recognised as being near the hotel. The whole thing came out at 6.53 miles, time 45:36 for a 6:59/mile average.

3.2 miles easy, 3.6 miles moderate
Ran along the seafront to Port Camille Rayon before breakfast. It was early enough that the streets were fairly deserted. 3.18 miles in 23:21, average pace 7:20/mile.
Pace splits: 8:06, 7:10, 6:54, 6:37
Later on I ran the same loop as yesterday afternoon. I made it through the first mile inside 7 minutes and still managed to pick it up a bit after that to set what would inevitably remain an unbeaten route PB for the rest of the holiday. This time the distance came out at 3.63 miles, finishing time 23:55, average pace 6:36/mile.

3.3 miles slow, 3.6 miles steady
In the morning I ran the same route as yesterday afternoon, with Natasha this time, although we only ran down part of Rue Emilie and back at the end, making 3.26 miles in 31:00 for a 9:31/mile average.
Later on I tried a longer version of the route, continuing along the Route de Saint-Jean and down Boulevard Pierre Delmas, then down Chemin de Lauvert which didn't have a pavement, before rejoining Route de la Badine. This took the distance up to 3.62 miles, finishing time 25:14 for a 6:59/mile average.

Pace splits: 8:23, 8:29, 8:25, 8:44
In the afternoon I tried a loop in the opposite direction, heading up the steep hill of Chemin de la Colle, up some more hills on the Avenue du Châtaignier, down the Chemin des Autriches and along the Route de la Badine to Chemin de la Colle. When I got back to the hotel I was still a bit short of the required 3.5 miles so I added a smaller loop up the Rue Emilie, whose challenging gradient was dwarfed by a ridiculously steep hill just around the corner. This however took the total up to 3.62 miles, completed in 25:05, 6:56/mile average.

Went out before breakfast again for the usual Queen Margaret Drive route which came out at 2.51 miles this time. Time was 19:23, average pace 7:43/mile, HR 133. Felt a bit easier than on previous mornings. Later on I had to wade through ankle-deep water at Cowcaddens and walked on a bit to see how far I could get with bare feet, and although it was OK to begin with, I had to give up when I reached Rose Street as there was too much grit on the pavement.

7.4 miles tempo
Went to the Thursday club session for the first time in ages. There were a couple of other folk who were just coming back from injury, all planning a fairly easy run. We had a choice between 7 and 10 miles. Most went for the longer route but I thought it might be pushing my luck a bit, especially as I had worn the Newton Motus in case I needed to try to keep up with anybody. A combined fast pack of 6 set off at a fairly steady pace towards Bearsden. I nearly got squashed at Canniesburn Toll but was slightly more careful after that. Three of us had pushed ahead by the time the routes split, and I was left on my own to head up Stockiemuir Road. The rest of the route took me down Craigdhu Road, Park Road and back down Milngavie Road. There was supposed to be a 2-mile tempo stretch starting at Main Street but I was starting to flag a bit by this point, and the climb up Switchback Road was particularly hard work. Got back to the bridge in 48:50 for the 7.40 miles, average pace 6:36/mile, HR 158.

Had terrible hip and lower back tightness during the day but I was able to run through it in the evening, when I had another go at a longer route via Clober Road and Craigton Road from Bearsden Asda, wary of the fact that I had probably set my shin splints recovery back a couple of weeks last time I tried it. This time I felt like I was making decent progress on the long climb up Craigton Road, and I maintained a reasonable pace for the last few miles with only some minor hip pain. Finished the 5.34 miles in 35:38, average pace 6:40/mile, HR 152.

3.3 miles slow, 7 miles steady
Went out in the morning with Natasha for our usual West End route. Natasha had stitch trouble so we cut it a bit short, heading home via North Woodside Road instead of Napiershall Street. This made it 3.26 miles in 27:31, average pace 8:27/mile, HR 131.

2.5 miles easy, 4.3 miles steady
Went out in the morning for the same route as on Friday morning, this time a bit faster at 18:15 for the 2.48 miles, average pace 7:22/mile. On Great Western Road I noticed that although I felt absolutely fine, my heart rate was supposedly 181, so I stopped for a couple of seconds to check and decided a loose chest strap was causing the high readings. Later on I discovered a small, round bruise on the inner side of my painful shin, which suggests to me that it's almost back to normal, based on experience with a pulled hamstring several years back.
Pace splits: 7:47, 7:07, 7:01
In the afternoon I just needed a few more miles to put me within easy reach of 50 for the week, so I headed down North Woodside Road, down to Cowcaddens and up the steps onto the towpath. The fence blocking the path at the fire station had been taken down but after a couple of hundred metres it turned out that the towpath was still closed, so I turned round and headed back home. Finished the 4.27 miles in 29:53, average pace 7:00/mile. HR data was unusable again.

3.4 miles steady, 8.2 miles steady
Managed to get up early enough to run my usual West End route before breakfast. Seemed to go OK and finished the 3.35 miles in 23:55, average pace 7:08/mile, HR 140.
Pace splits (ave. HR): 7:36 (134), 6:54 (143), 6:58 (143), 6:57 (148)

In the early evening I ran a route I expected to be somewhere between 7 and 8 miles - along Great Western Road to Anniesland Cross, all the way down Crow Road, down Rosevale Street and along the cyclepath to the city centre where I had to pop into the office to collect the pizza I had forgotten to take home. Shin was playing up a bit in places and I didn't manage to pick the pace back up after I stopped, although I recovered not too badly and could bounce on the sore leg without any trouble later on. The total distance came out at 8.17 miles, time 55:31 for a 6:48/mile average, HR 154.

5.9 miles moderate
Dodged the club's paarlauf session and ran a few miles from Garscube Estate on my own instead, down Maryhill Road and Garrioch Road, up Shakespeare Street, down Queen Margaret Drive, along Great Western Road to Anniesland Cross, and back up Crow Road. Felt quite sluggish to begin with but started posting some decent splits after the first mile or so. After Dorchester Avenue I bumped into Gavin Harvie and ran with him as far as Lock 27. The final mile split was fairly encouraging as it included the climb up Bearsden Road to the top gate. Got back to Garscube Estate in 39:21 for the 5.94 miles, average pace 6:38/mile, HR 152.
Pace splits (ave. HR): 7:15 (137), 6:40 (148), 6:31 (152), 6:28 (156), 6:46 (155), 6:05 (165)

4.1 miles steady
Ran a different route from Bearsden Asda, over Mosshead Road, down Drymen Road to Canniesburn Toll and back up Milngavie Road. Felt quite fatigued and the faster miles later on were only because they were mostly downhill. Finished the 4.08 miles in 28:02, average pace 6:52/mile, HR 148.

Went out first thing for a loop of Queen Margaret Drive and North Woodside Road, 2.49 miles in 18:27, average pace 7:25/mile, HR 138. It went not too badly so I might consider trying to go out a couple of mornings this week as I attempt to build up my mileage.

4.1 miles steady
Ran my usual Cowcaddens - Great Western Road - Kirklee Road route, legs quite heavy from the previous evening's session. Also some shin tightness. Reported mileage of 4.21 seemed on the high side compared to previous attempts, so I edited the GPS trail to straighten it out a bit. Time was 28:21, adjusted distance 4.11 miles, average pace 6:53/mile, HR 148.

6.2 miles moderate
The club training session was an out-and-back so I thought I'd give it a try, wearing the Vomeros again. The route took us around the warm-up trail and down the Kelvin Walkway for 20 minutes. There was a small fast pack which set off at a comfortable enough pace before speeding up a bit, mindful of the fact that the way back would be broadly uphill. We were only a few metres short of Kelvinbridge when we had to turn round. I only fell off the pace in the last mile and eased off a bit more near the end to finish almost on schedule, 39:51 for 6.17 miles, 6:27/mile average, HR 164. Had a few fleeting shin pains but was otherwise OK.
Pace splits (ave. HR): 6:46 (148), 6:23 (161), 6:21 (162), 6:14 (166), 6:27 (171), 6:32 (172), 6:31 (171)
